COB and CSP LED strips – choosing dot-free lighting
Choosing the right product starts with the application, the dimensions and technical compatibility. This guide helps you compare the options before ordering.
What do COB and CSP mean?
COB and CSP technologies are used to make densely lit LED strips in which individual dots are less visible than usual. The evenness of the light also depends on the structure of the strip, the viewing angle and any diffuser. Being dot-free does not automatically mean the same light output or colour rendering in every product.
Where is a dot-free LED strip suitable?
A COB strip is especially suitable for kitchen backsplashes, furniture, shelves and indirect lighting, where the strip or its reflection may be visible from close up. On glossy surfaces, individual LED dots can stand out, in which case an even line of light is often more pleasing. The installation position and the direction of the light also affect glare.
Light output, colour temperature and CRI
Choose the light output according to the intended use: for ambient lighting, a lower output is often enough compared with worktop lighting. 2700–3000 K produces warm light and 4000 K a more neutral task light. Good colour rendering, for example CRI 90+, helps show the shades of food, wood and textiles naturally.
Width, profile and thermal management
Check the width of the COB or CSP strip against the inner width of the LED profile. Particularly narrow strips suit some tight structures, but connections and cabling also need space. An aluminium profile can help with thermal management if the power of the strip and the manufacturer's instructions require it.
Power supply and control
Choose a power supply that matches the operating voltage of the strip and size its output based on the total length of the strip. CCT, RGB and RGBW strips need a controller that matches their features. For long runs, check the maximum length permitted by the manufacturer and the required power feed points so that the light stays even.

Frequently asked questions
Is a COB LED strip completely dot-free?
In many installations the line of light looks uniform, but the result depends on the strip, the profile and the viewing angle.
Does a COB strip need a diffuser?
Not always to hide the dots, but a diffuser can still protect the strip and soften the light.
Is a COB strip suitable for a kitchen?
Yes, when the light output, colour rendering and installation are suitable for worktop lighting.
Can a COB strip be dimmed?
Yes, with a suitable power supply or controller, if the chosen strip and system support dimming.
