Choosing an LED strip – how to find the right light strip
In the LED light strips and LED strips category, the right solution depends on the application, the technical requirements and the installation method. The guidance below will help you compare products before ordering.
Choose an LED strip according to the application
A kitchen worktop needs even, sufficiently powerful light; for indirect ceiling lighting, light distribution and length are the key factors; on a shelf, the dimensions of the profile and strip are what matter. Outdoors and in damp spaces, check the level of protection and the operating environment approved by the manufacturer. Do not choose a strip based solely on price or wattage.
12 V, 24 V or 48 V?
24 V is a practical choice for many LED strip installations in the home. For a strip of the same power, the current is lower than in a 12 V system, which helps to manage voltage drop. Longer runs may benefit from a 48 V option. Even so, check the maximum continuous length permitted by the manufacturer, the feed points and the power supply voltage.
COB, CSP and traditional LED strips
COB and CSP constructions can be used to create a light line that looks even, especially in shallow profiles. A traditional LED strip can be a good choice when the light points are hidden by a sufficiently deep profile or when the installation is indirect. The width of the strip, LED density, diffuser and viewing angle all affect the end result.
Colour temperature, colour rendering and control
2700–3000 K often suits a cosy home, while 4000 K suits neutral task lighting. Good colour rendering, for example CRI 90+, is useful in the kitchen and when showcasing materials. CCT strips are used to adjust the shade of white; RGB/RGBW strips are used to create coloured effects. Choose a compatible controller and power supply.
Sizing the power supply and profile
Calculate the total power of the strip using the formula W/m × metres, and allow for the power reserve required by the manufacturer. For long runs, also plan the feed with voltage drop in mind. An aluminium profile helps with the finish and with heat management, but always check the width of the strip and the compatibility of the profile.
Compatible products and accessories
Always verify the compatibility of the chosen product and its accessories from the model-specific product information. Also take a look at the following categories:
Frequently asked questions
Which LED strip is suitable for the kitchen?
Often a 24 V COB strip with good colour rendering and sufficient light output. The installation and the profile determine the glare.
Why does the end of the LED strip dim?
The cause may be voltage drop over a long run. Check the feed points, the cable sizing and the manufacturer's maximum length.
Does an LED strip need a power supply?
Most 12/24/48 V strips need a power supply suited to the voltage and power.
How can I get dot-free light?
Choose a suitable COB/CSP strip or a sufficiently dense LED strip together with a suitable profile and diffuser.
